Española School Board To Pick Gutierrez For Superintendent

Staff Report

The decision isn’t final yet, but the Española School Board met Friday evening to select a final candidate for superintendent.

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, the three finalists, Art Blea, Bobbie Gutierrez, and Robert Stannard, met with the search committee and School Board for final interviews and a public forum Thursday evening (see earlier story here) where they answered questions from the audience.

The school board then met in a closed executive session Friday at 5 p.m. After nearly two hours of discussion, School Board Vice President Yolanda Salazar nominated Bobbie Gutierrez as the final candidate in open session. The board voted 3 to 2 in favor of Ms. Gutierrez.

School board President Ruben Archuleta, Vice President Yolanda Salazar and Member Gilbert Serrano voted in favor of Gutierrez, while members Pablo Lujan and Patrick Herrera voted no.

The school board will meet on Monday with Gutierrez for a final interview before finalizing a job offer.
When reached for a statement on the School Board’s vote and possibly returning as Espanola’s superintendent, Gutierrez said "I am very excited to return to Española and continue the good work we started in the 2015-16 school year. I look forward getting started and preparing for the upcoming school year, and can't wait to greet our principals,
teachers and students when they return later this summer. I also look forward to working with our parents and community to move EPS forward to the successful district I know we can be by working together towards common goals".
