Deaguero’s 3 Point Party Lifts NNMC Lady Eagles Over Kansas Wesleyan

Northern New Mexico College’s Lady Eagles, coming off a heartbreaking buzzer loss on Friday night looked to redeem themselves against a very talented team from Salina, Kansas, on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The first half was as close as it was on Friday, but a second-quarter surge by the Coyotes pushed the lead to 36 – 28 at the end of the first half.

However, just like the night before, the Lady Eagles came out fighting right out of the gate, connecting on dribble drives and dishes right underneath the basket.

The recipient of these passes was Jade Hill who finished the game with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

The Lady Eagles were able to continue the pressure with solid team defense and timely shooting from Española Valley native Leah DeAguero. DeAguero first hit a three from the corner, and then from the wing on the break.

This gave the Eagles the cushion they needed. Another three by Leah pushed the Eagle lead to 13 points with only 2:45 left in the game. Cheyenne Cordova dished out 9 assists, as 5 came in the 4th quarter to help her teammates put the game out of reach.

The Lady Eagles played keep away down the stretch and were victorious with a score of 81-70. With the Eagles finally finding their shooting touch, DeAguero led the scoring charge with 19 points including 5 for 5 three pointers, followed by a very solid night from RanDee Toya, with 16, and off the bench Kyanne Kowatch adding 14.

The Eagles will look to keep the good shooting and strong defensive effort on Monday, October 30, 2017, as they travel to play NCAA Division I Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah.
